Faculty in NYU Langone’s Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine ensure that patients receive comprehensive clinical anesthesiology services before, during, and after all types of surgery. We also provide care in settings other than the operating room, such as the intensive care unit, ambulatory care centers, emergency department, labor and delivery, catheterization laboratory, and electrophysiology suites at NYU Langone and some of its affiliate hospitals.

Types of Anesthesiology Care

In addition to general anesthesiology care for bariatric surgery; heart, liver, and lung transplants; and the anemia clinic, our department’s various subspecialties ensure that patients have access to a full range of clinical services. These include cardiothoracic, critical care, neurosurgical, obstetric, orthopedic, and pediatric anesthesiology, and pain medicine.

Our faculty use the latest evidence-based approaches to ensure both general and regional anesthesia are safe and effective. All types of sedation are available, from minimal amounts of antianxiety medications to intravenous medications for conscious or deep sedation. Our department’s pain medicine specialists also provide pharmacological, physical, interventional, and psychological approaches to provide relief for patients with transient, acute, or chronic pain.

Preoperative Assessment, Consultation, and Treatment Center

Our anesthesiologists typically meet with patients at the Preoperative Assessment, Consultation, and Treatment Center (PACT) during preadmission testing to take a medical history, evaluate the airway and cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and to address any immediate discomfort they may be experiencing. During this consultation, anesthesiologists also assess patient preferences to help formulate an anesthesiology plan.

Perioperative and Postoperative Monitoring

Closely monitoring patients during surgeries and procedures to administer and adjust necessary sedation, analgesia, or anesthesia is an integral part of our care. We also monitor and help stabilize vital signs and provide airway management and intraoperative life support. Post-surgery, we closely observe patients in the recovery room for oxygen saturation, breathing, level of consciousness, and activity, and prescribe continued pain relief, anti-nausea, and other medications.
