Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

Fellows in pediatric emergency medicine at NYU Langone have the unique opportunity to train in two complementary environments: the pediatric emergency service at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue and the KiDS Emergency Department at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone.

This dual exposure allows fellows to experience the breadth of pediatric emergency medicine, and to become expert and compassionate clinicians and leaders who share our commitment to high-quality, equitable healthcare.

Our three-year fellowship is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and is hosted by the Department of Pediatrics and the Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine. Faculty from both departments lead a dynamic fellowship curriculum that blends clinical and didactic training and includes simulation-based medical education, educational scholarship, ultrasound, and social medicine.

We also recognize the importance of a healthy work–life balance, and host a range of wellness initiatives to foster camaraderie and wellbeing among our cohort.

As graduates, our fellows are insightful teachers, knowledgeable investigators, passionate community advocates, and skilled administrators who go on to make a meaningful impact in the field.

Fellowship Clinical Sites

Pediatric emergency medicine fellows train primarily at Bellevue and NYU Langone’s KiDS Emergency Department.

Bellevue Pediatric Emergency Service

Founded in 1736, Bellevue has a storied history of caring for a diverse population as the flagship institution of the NYC Health + Hospitals system, and its ethos of exceptional care and social justice permeates our program today. The pediatric emergency service at Bellevue provides care to more than 25,000 children and young adults each year. Pediatric emergency service physicians manage ill and injured children, adolescents, and young adults under 25 years of age, including those requiring acute resuscitation.

As a Level 2 Pediatric Trauma Center, Bellevue receives acutely injured children who require prompt stabilization and treatment. In addition, Bellevue is a regional spinal cord injury center and a limb reimplantation center.

As a municipal hospital, Bellevue’s pediatric emergency service fulfills the acute care needs of local children and serves as an urgent referral center for children in the care of the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. Our clinicians work closely with the Child Protection Team as well as the patient advocacy and social work teams to advocate for patients and their families. Our dedicated emergency child psychiatry unit allows the service to focus on medical acuity while providing a discrete educational experience in psychiatric emergencies during dedicated selective time.

KiDS Emergency Department

The KiDS Emergency Department opened in 2014, with a discrete care area for children, adolescents, and young adults. This emergency department cares for more than 15,000 children per year, including a large number of patients with medically complex conditions. Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street, a pediatric quaternary care center, opened in 2018 and boasts 34 inpatient and 34 pediatric intensive and cardiac critical care beds, to which children from the KiDS Emergency Department may be admitted.

Additional Pediatric Emergency Medicine Clinical Sites

In addition to rotations in pediatric emergency medicine, fellows participate in rotations in adult emergency medicine, pediatric anesthesiology, and pediatric critical care at Bellevue, Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and NYU Langone Health—Cobble Hill Emergency Department at the Joseph S. and Diane H. Steinberg Ambulatory Care Center.

Fellows also participate in outside rotations at the NYC Poison Control Center, the Fire Department of the City of New York Bureau of Emergency Medical Services, and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

How to Apply

Applicants should register and apply through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) of the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Please provide three letters of recommendation, including one from your residency program director. Applicants must also register with the National Resident Matching Program, also known as The Match. We participate in the Pediatric Specialties Fall Match. Acceptance through The Match is considered a definite contract.

All applicants must be eligible to obtain a New York State medical license by the start of the fellowship.

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship welcomes applicants who come from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds in the field of medicine, and those who aspire to predominantly care for underserved and marginalized communities.
