Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine Education

Educators in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine train residents, fellows, and medical students who are interested in the subspecialty of pediatric pulmonology. They encourage general pediatrics and critical care trainees to enroll in this training program to learn important skills for diagnosing and treating pediatric patients with pulmonary conditions.

Residents rotate in outpatient clinics, and during these rotations, they treat pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis, asthma, aerodigestive disorders, and chronic or congenital airway conditions. Residents learn to read pulmonary function tests and interpret the results of flexible bronchoscopies, which are essential for the diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary conditions.

In the division’s four-week elective, residents gain experience in outpatient and inpatient care of patients with complex pulmonary conditions, including neurologically impaired children with respiratory and aerodigestive disease, and patients with severe asthma, cystic fibrosis, and primary ciliary dyskinesia. Residents learn various diagnostic approaches and how to perform comprehensive physical exams and physiological evaluations. The division also offers a joint fellowship in pediatric pulmonology with NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, and residents collaborate with the pediatric pulmonary fellows in clinical and academic settings.

Through the Department of Pediatrics, the division offers medical students several programs to learn skills in pediatric pulmonary medicine. The pediatrics medical student concentration program allows students to conduct clinical research on pediatric asthma, chronic cough, cystic fibrosis, and aerodigestive disorders alongside the division’s faculty and to learn about ethical issues related to medical care in neurologically impaired children with respiratory conditions. The division also offers a summer scholarship program in clinical research for pediatric pulmonary medicine.
