Division of Pediatric Radiology

The Division of Pediatric Radiology, part of NYU Langone Health’s Department of Radiology, provides a safe and nurturing environment for children to receive comprehensive diagnostic imaging services. We also train future radiologists to interpret pediatric imaging studies using the latest techniques.

We use some of the most technologically advanced imaging modalities in the country, including high-resolution MRI and ultrafast multidetector CT. Our protocols are designed to produce the highest-quality diagnostic images while minimizing radiation exposure.

With direction from Nancy R. Fefferman, MD, division chief, our renowned faculty publish in prestigious peer-reviewed journals and lecture at national meetings, including those of the Radiologic Society of North America and the Society for Pediatric Radiology. Our faculty also hold leadership roles within these organizations.

Pediatric Imaging Education

We provide dynamic, broad-based pediatric imaging education as part of radiology training for medical students and radiology residencies. Our training programs promote accurate evaluation and interpretation of pediatric imaging studies. Daily virtual rounds with pediatric inpatient services center the radiologist as an integral part of the healthcare team and enhance this educational experience.

Medical students can participate in the pediatric radiology elective if they choose to explore radiology as part of NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Curriculum for the 21st Century. Residents participate in pediatric imaging rotations as part of the Diagnostic Radiology Residency and Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency.

Trainees at all levels gain real-time experience with pediatric imaging. You learn to properly assess pediatric diseases through various imaging modalities, create reports for referring clinicians, and provide imaging recommendations based on the safest, most up-to-date practices.

Training features a balanced blend of patient care and didactic teaching including case conference sessions and interdepartmental case management conferences with colleagues in pediatric oncology, pediatric surgery, pediatric pathology, pediatric pulmonology, and pediatric nephrology. Because we recognize the importance of patient interactions in pediatric radiology, we encourage participants to develop active listening and nonverbal communication skills to cultivate a pleasant bedside manner.

Pediatric Imaging Research

Research in the Division of Pediatric Imaging focuses on improving techniques in cross-sectional imaging, reducing the dose of ionizing radiation, and making practice improvements to assure the safest and most accurate diagnostic imaging services for children.

Medical students, residents, fellows, and pediatric radiologists have opportunities to participate in basic science, translational research, and clinical research in our division. Our past projects have included participating in the first randomized multi-institutional study using artificial intelligence to determine bone age based on images of pediatric patients. Pediatric Imaging Clinical Services

We provide the full range of imaging services for children at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital at NYU Langone, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and NYU Langone’s many ambulatory practices in Manhattan and Brooklyn and on Long Island.

We offer the following pediatric imaging procedures at our locations:

  • conventional radiology
  • ultrasonography
  • fluoroscopy procedures such as voiding cystourethrograms, esophagrams, video swallow studies, and contrast enemas
  • advanced imaging with CT and MRI

Our fellowship-trained, board-certified pediatric radiologists use the latest advanced imaging equipment and technology to minimize imaging-related radiation exposure and the need for sedation. We follow Image Gently® guidelines  to ensure that our procedures meet the highest standards of safety.
