Rusk Rehabilitation Research

We are dedicated to advancing our understanding of rehabilitation medicine through scientific research.

Faculty members in NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation are dedicated to advancing our understanding of rehabilitation through scientific inquiry. Our innovations and advances set the standard in rehabilitation care for every stage of life and every phase of recovery, and we perpetuate Dr. Howard A. Rusk’s philosophy to be leaders in the field.

Researchers in rehabilitation medicine are funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research, including a model systems grant to support our departmental initiatives in traumatic brain injury. We maintain active research programs in the following areas:

We also encourage scientific inquiry among our faculty, as well as residents, fellows, and medical students, who have many opportunities to engage in high-quality translational research. We also offer research training opportunities for students and postdoctoral scholars across our various research programs.

Rusk Rehabilitation Research Symposium

Rusk Rehabilitation hosts a research symposium featuring renowned speakers. In our latest edition, marking the 75th Anniversary, we organized a one-day research symposium and reception. This celebratory event featured a presentation of awards, the Rusk Award for Leadership and Innovation in PM&R, and a variety of other social and professional networking opportunities.

We were honored to have JohnRoss Rizzo, MD, MSci, FACRM, a Howard A. Rusk Leadership & Innovation Award Recipient, as our keynote speaker.

The symposium showcased presentations on multitudes of topics. Ranging from, "Determining everyday propulsion characteristics in manual wheelchair users", to "Social and Romantic Relationships and Sexual Health: A qualitative exploration of individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI)", and many more.

The awardees include Dr. Rizzo, who was presented with the Howard A. Rusk Leadership and Innovation Award; Dr. Batavia, who received the Distinguished Alumni Award, and Dr. Oh-Park who received the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Award.
