PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and the
Office of Minority Affairs invites applications from students
for participation in a summer research internship program in the
medical sciences at New York University Medical Center. The purpose
of the program is to give students who may be interested in pursuing
careers in the biomedical sciences (PhD, MD or MD-PhD) the opportunity
to conduct research and to be exposed to the excitement of an
academic medical environment at a major research center. Students
may work with faculty in the disciplines of biochemistry, biomedical
imaging, cellular and molecular biology, computational biology,
developmental genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular oncology,
neurosciences and physiology, parasitology, pathobiology, pharmacology,
structural biology and virology.
TRAINING AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
The program is multi-faceted. It includes: “hands on”
research on a project directed by senior faculty members of the
Medical Center; exposure to the practice of medicine at a major
teaching hospital by individual physician mentors; participation
in introductory and professional level seminars; career seminars
conducted by deans and other faculty regarding opportunities available
in the biomedical sciences and how to apply to specific programs;
and, a cultural component in which students are escorted to concerts,
museums, theater and other events in New York City. Trainees will
receive a stipend of $3,000, round trip travel expenses to New
York City and accommodations in University Housing.
CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION
The program is designed for mature, well-qualified undergraduates
who have completed their sophomore or junior year of college.
Qualified applicants should have a 3.4 GPA or better and at least
1 full semester of bench laboratory research. The selection of
students will be made considering their academic record, previous
research experience, if any, and letters of recommendation from
faculty advisors and/or research supervisors. Significant importance
will be given to their commitment to a career in biomedical research.
A committee comprised of PhD, MD, MD-PhD students and faculty
will review applicants for admission. This program is open to
all U.S. and international students who are currently attending
a U.S. college or university only.
COMMITMENT TO MINORITY STUDENT REPRESENTATION
The NYU School of Medicine is committed
to increasing the number of students from underrepresented groups
in the biomedical sciences pursuing PhD, MD or MD/PhD studies.
It should also be noted that this Program is affiliated
with the Leadership Alliance.
