Emergency Medicine Training for Medical Students Selective in Emergency Medicine

Selective in Emergency Medicine

The Selective in Emergency Medicine offered by NYU Langone’s Ronald O. Perelman Department of Emergency Medicine is a four-week rotation available to NYU Grossman School of Medicine medical students in their clinical years. The selective is a prerequisite for the Advanced Emergency Medicine Elective.

The selective’s comprehensive curriculum includes clinical shifts at NYU Langone’s Ronald O. Perelman Center for Emergency Services, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

Further educational opportunities include flipped classroom lectures given by emergency medicine faculty and senior emergency medicine resident education chiefs; high-fidelity simulation and ultrasound sessions; student-only lectures taught by Neal Lewin, MD; toxicology and pain management lectures taught by renowned professors; resident conferences and morning reports; hands-on procedure workshops; and a Prevention and Education Partnership session at a local high school.

Our selective emphasizes a hands-on, problem-based approach to the recognition and treatment of acute disorders spanning the entirety of medicine, surgery, pediatrics, gynecology, and psychiatry. While rotating through different emergency departments, students gain exposure to the full continuum of acuity, from minor, self-limiting problems to unstable, critical illness.
