Family Health Centers at NYU Langone Internal Medicine Residency

Our Family Health Centers at NYU Langone Internal Medicine Residency trains residents to address health disparities in the diverse patient populations we serve.

Federally funded through the Health Resources and Services Administration and academically affiliated with NYU Langone’s Department of Medicine, residents in our rigorous primary care internal medicine program benefit from training in vibrant community health settings with the support of an academic medical center that is experienced in graduate medical education.

Our curriculum is designed to train internal medicine residents to be highly proficient in caring for vulnerable populations with a broad range of critical heath needs.

Our objective is to improve our understanding of the health needs of five patient groups who are most vulnerable to health disparities:

  • those with chronic diseases
  • minority residents and recent immigrants
  • young adults
  • the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or questioning (LGTBQ+) community
  • vulnerable populations with complex needs, including those who are homeless and have comorbid behavioral health conditions

In addition to the core of internal medicine, the residency offers significant enhancement of cognitive knowledge and in the procedural skills aspects of the curriculum in the needs of underserved and vulnerable populations. The resources of our community-based health centers are ideally matched for implementation of a targeted curriculum in these areas.

It is our hope that this residency program will ultimately expand the primary care physician workforce, as those trained in community healthcare settings tend to stay in primary care. By providing a comprehensive educational experience to residents in our program, we hope to improve the health of the community.

The Family Health Centers at NYU Langone include 8 primary care and specialty clinics, more than 40 school-based health and dental clinics, an extensive behavioral health program, and a community medicine program that treats homeless and marginalized populations throughout New York City. We serve more than 100,000 patients and average 600,000 doctor’s visits annually.

The Family Health Centers at NYU Langone Internal Medicine Residency is accredited as part of a multifaceted strategic plan to expand access to high-quality healthcare to the vulnerable and disenfranchised communities in Brooklyn. We aim to create a synergy between our clinical and educational missions to benefit the quality of our patients’ care.
