At NYU Langone, physicians and educators in the Division of Pediatric Critical Care teach residents how to manage the care of critically ill pediatric patients through hands-on bedside training, lectures, simulation training, and conferences. Training is provided in two locations: the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street, and the PICU at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

Pediatrics residents rotate through the PICUs and are supervised by the attending physicians 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including during rounds. Lectures focusing on PICU patient care two or three times per week are offered.

Throughout the academic year, faculty conduct mock code training, allowing residents to learn how to recognize and handle emergency situations and employ proper equipment and communication skills in a simulated setting.

Residents participate in simulation sessions at the New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences (NYSIM), which provides medical, nursing, and dental simulation courses for NYU Grossman School of Medicine students, residents, nurses, and physicians. Participating residents can apply critical thinking and practice hands-on care of critically ill pediatric simulation patients in a safe learning environment.

Residents have the opportunity to take the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Pediatric Fundamental Critical Care Support (PFCCS) course, which introduces principles important to the care of critically ill or injured children. Held twice a year, the course focuses on essential pediatric critical care topics through didactic lectures and hands-on skill stations.
