Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare Ghana
The Section for Global Health leads the Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare (AMPATH) Consortium of academic health centers in the AMPATH Ghana partnership with the University for Development Studies School of Medicine (UDS-SOM), Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), and other affiliated institutions in Ghana. This partnership works toward mutually beneficial outcomes for all partners—improving the health and wellbeing of people in communities in northern Ghana; educating tomorrow’s medical experts worldwide; and jointly researching breakthroughs that will inform improvements in population health around the world.
We are collaborating with our partners in northern Ghana to identify priorities, improve access to comprehensive healthcare services, and advance health equity. AMPATH Ghana leverages the strengths of Ghana’s existing healthcare system and serves as a resource to Ghana’s health and education leaders as they strengthen their public sector health system in and around Tamale.
AMPATH’s Mission
AMPATH improves the health of people in underserved communities by working in partnership with academic health centers, ministries of health, and others to build public sector health systems and promote wellbeing. Guided by the principle of leading with care, we set out to accomplish the following goals:
- deliver and sustain effective healthcare services
- reduce health disparities and address social determinants of health
- develop and strengthen human capacity through training and education
- advance research that improves health
- strengthen partner institutions
Our Work
The Section for Global Health is collaborating with our partners at UDS-SoM and TTH on a number of priority areas, including co-designing a comprehensive Chronic Disease Management program focused initially on hypertension, diabetes, cervical cancer, and mental health; establishing an Infectious Disease Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory to expand molecular diagnostic coverage for diagnosis, surveillance, research, and teaching in northern Ghana; and strengthening overall health system preparedness for future health emergencies, such as COVID-19 and emerging infectious diseases.
We have co-developed virtual, web-based academic training opportunities to engage students and a broader global audience during COVID-19, and we are working to establish the Tamale Education and Innovation Center for Health Professionals (TEACH) to modernize and transform hands-on clinical training and inter professional education for health workers.
In collaboration with researchers from UDS-SoM and TTH, we are conducting a series of pilot studies at the intersection of climate change and health, which will provide a foundation for larger extramurally funded studies in the future; and we are strengthening the research infrastructure to successfully compete for extramural research awards, including from the National Institutes of Health.
Call for Proposals: Global Health Clinical Skills Training Project
AMPATH Ghana was recently awarded a grant (TEACH) to establish a clinical skills training program in Tamale, in partnership with our colleagues in northern Ghana.
Faculty from across NYU Grossman School of Medicine will have the opportunity to participate in this exciting endeavor. AMPATH Ghana is seeking faculty members who have experience in clinical education and a strong interest in global health to submit applications of interest to partner with counterpart faculty from Ghana on specific clinical skills training pilot projects.
AMPATH Global
AMPATH Ghana is a partnership within AMPATH Global, a network of universities and academic health centers that collaborate with public sector health systems to ensure essential and equitable health for all people. AMPATH Global originated with AMPATH Kenya more than 30 years ago as a partnership between medical schools at Indiana University in the United States and Moi University in Kenya. AMPATH Global has developed and inspired future leaders in healthcare in both North America and Africa, and produced hundreds of articles in the scientific literature, all while successfully responding to healthcare needs in homes, communities, and clinical facilities within its entire catchment area.
AMPATH Kenya
AMPATH Kenya is a partnership between Moi University, Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, and the AMPATH Consortium of universities led by Indiana University. AMPATH Kenya works with partners to implement evidence-based interventions aimed at strengthening the health system and improving population health in western Kenya. Through this partnership, investigators at the Section for Global Health have published research on integrated care for cardiovascular risk reduction, leveraging digital health for global chronic disease management, and integrating income generation with group medical visits for hypertension and diabetes.
AMPATH Mexico
AMPATH Mexico is a partnership comprising leading health organizations in Mexico along with the University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Medical School and the AMPATH Consortium of academic health centers around the world including NYU Langone. Through this partnership, faculty and trainees at NYU Langone have the opportunity to engage with AMPATH Mexico. AMPATH Mexico starts with healthcare for patients and then does more to empower communities, educate tomorrow’s medical experts, and research breakthroughs that aim to change the health of the world.
