MD Student Preorientation Checklist
Complete the following tasks to prepare for life on campus at NYU School of Medicine. You will be contacted by the Office of Student Affairs in early July with detailed instructions and tips to help you begin working on your checklist.
Set Up Your NYU School of Medicine Email Account
The summer before your first year of medical school, you receive a welcome packet in the mail with an NYU School of Medicine email address, username, and temporary password. This email account is your primary avenue of communication for all official NYU School of Medicine correspondence.
For help configuring your account, contact NYU Langone’s Medical Center Information Technology Customer Support Center at 212-263-6868 or visit Support and Services on the atNYULMC.org intranet (a Kerberos ID and password are required). Once your account is set up, check it daily for important information about Orientation Week and your upcoming classes.
Create an OrgSync Profile
OrgSync is a web application, arranged by “portals,” that allows NYU School of Medicine students and faculty to communicate with one another. It is an online locus for extracurricular student clubs, as well as certain official school offices and programs. The Office of Diversity Affairs, the Office of Student Affairs, the International Health Program, and others use OrgSync to communicate with students about events.
You can sign in to OrgSync (a Kerberos ID and password are required) to complete your basic profile. Shortly after you enroll, you will receive an invitation to join your class portal.
Obtain Your ID Cards
You need an NYU Langone photo ID card to access many locations on campus. To obtain your ID card, send a digital photo that meets our photo specifications to the NYU Langone Security Office at email@example.com.
The Security Office accepts front-facing headshots with a plain background (as in a passport or driver’s license photo), formatted as JPEG files that are at least 640 by 480 pixels in size. Be sure to include your full name and Kerberos ID in your email, and list your class year in the subject line.
You can also have your photo taken at the NYU Langone Security Office at 550 First Avenue, room 102-D, during the following hours:
NYU Langone Security Office Hours
Monday: 6:30AM to 3:00PM
Tuesday: 8:30AM to 3:00PM
Wednesday: 8:30AM to 6:30PM
Thursday: 8:30AM to 3:00PM
Friday: 8:30AM to 3:00PM
You also need an NYU-specific photo ID card, called the NYUCard, to access other student services. NYU’s website provides details on requesting an NYUCard.
Complete Compliance Training
At NYU School of Medicine, you have access to real patient data, which is permitted by federal regulations for educational purposes. All students must complete compliance training in the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, to protect patient privacy. You must also complete a Code of Conduct training module to ensure that you understand the obligations that are part of working for Medicaid and Medicare healthcare providers.
You complete this training online. The iDevelop Learning Management System on atNYULMC.org, the intranet for NYU Langone employees, is available 24 hours a day (a Kerberos ID and password are required). Instructions on accessing these training modules are sent to your NYU School of Medicine email address.
Register for Orientation
After accepting the invitation to join your class portal on OrgSync, there will be a series of necessary forms to complete. Register for orientation in OrgSync to specify your NYU School of Medicine T-shirt size, order any diagnostic equipment you need to participate in patient-centered training experiences (such as a stethoscope, reflex hammer, tuning fork, or pen light), and request tickets to the White Coat Ceremony. As part of the registration process, please indicate which of the optional, ticketed Orientation Week events you wish to attend.
Send Orientation Payment
To determine your orientation payment, calculate the costs associated with any diagnostic equipment you order during orientation registration and the optional, ticketed orientation events you select.
Because space for ticketed events is limited, reservations are confirmed only after payment is received. Make orientation checks payable to NYU School of Medicine, and send to NYU School of Medicine Office of Student Affairs at 550 First Ave, MS G50, c/o Orientation, New York, NY 10016.
Select Your NYU School of Medicine Health Benefits
NYU School of Medicine provides comprehensive student health insurance. Detailed instructions on selecting or waiving health insurance are sent to your NYU email address. If you wish to enroll in the plan or waive coverage, select the appropriate option during our open enrollment period and supply the requested information.
Students who do not indicate a preference during open enrollment are automatically enrolled in the student health insurance plan. Those who do not select vision and dental benefits are not able to opt in to these services until the next open enrollment period.
The NYU Langone Benefits Services Department processes all student health insurance information. If you need assistance or have questions, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or call us at 212-404-3787.
Complete the Matriculating Student Questionnaire
The Association of American Medical Colleges uses the online Matriculating Student Questionnaire to survey all incoming medical students on topics such as pre–medical school experiences, medical school selection, career interests, and educational financing.
The data provided on the questionnaire are then reported back to participating medical schools, which use them to adjust educational programs to better meet students’ needs.
You receive an invitation to complete the questionnaire at the email address you provided upon registration with the American Medical College Application Service®.
