MRI, PET and biological markers in the early diagnosis of Alzheimer Disease
Summary

Our team specializes in the development and testing of biological markers for the advanced detection of Alzheimer's disease (AD). We are currently NIH supported to study normal aging including subjects with family histories of AD, individuals with dementia risk factors such as hypertension, chronic peripheral inflammatory diseases, and impaired sleep, brain using MRI and PET, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood , and saliva. We currently maintain one of the world's largest research repository of biological samples from normal aging human subjects.. Our prior work successfully developed prediction tests for future symptoms using anatomical and glucose metabolism imaging to identify correlates of clinically verified disease. Our current work is anchored to studies of the clearance and propagation of misfolded proteins. The CSF is the carrier of waste proteins including those known to accumulate in AD.  To this end we recently reported the first non-invasive imaging test to measure the reduced clearance of CSF in AD and demonstrated its relationship to increased brain amyloid levels. We are actively developing approaches to treat CSF clearance reductions and to monitor protein outcomes in brain, CSF, and blood.
