Summary

This project studies the immune modulatory effects of the drug thalidomide on the fibrosis of scleroderma. The centerpiece of the study is a 1 year, double blind, placebo controlled clinical trial of thalidomide in scleroderma. Outcome measures include procollagen mRNA in serial skin biopsies as well as immunohistochemistry data, plasma cytokine levels, and flow cytometry assessment of blood cell subsets and Th1/Th2 immune responses. Additional studies include thalidomide''s effects on in vitro collagen production by dermal fibroblasts.
