The OR Nurse Residency Program

NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases OR Nurse Residency Program is a competency based program which utilizes the AORN Perioperative 101 Core Curriculum. The program provides an evidenced based comprehensive curriculum which includes core learning modules written by perioperative nurse authors, peer reviewed and based on AORN Standards, Recommended Practices and Guidelines. The program is designed for registered nurses without previous perioperative experience. The concept of “novice to expert” is incorporated into the perioperative competency based education process. (AORN, 2007).

The program is coordinated and conducted by NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases clinical educators in accordance with the specialized needs of our patient population.  The principles of adult learning are utilized in all teaching and learning situations. The teaching learning methodology is selected to enhance the learning process. There are three categories of learning which are utilized in the program. The three categories are cognitive learning, psychomotor skills and affective learning. The didactic portion of the program is a computer based program which is provided in standardized core learning modules that are assigned in specific categories to enable the learner to build on the acquisition of knowledge. Skills labs are provided in a controlled setting to enable the ability to utilize the knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe quality patient care. The OR Nurse Residency Program is designed with a clinical preceptorship to provide the nurse with a supportive environment in which to learn various procedures, policies and guidelines of the institution to meet the needs of the nurse building on his / her individual knowledge and skills. This opportunity enables the nurse to continue to learn and develop new skills and abilities throughout the program and apply them in an actual Perioperative setting.

The Department of Perioperative Services provides learning opportunities in the specialty of orthopedics such as Total Joint replacements, Spinal Surgery, Sports Medicine and Trauma and Hand Services for both adult and pediatric patients. The interests and safety of patients take precedence over all other concerns through the implementation of quality assessment and continuous quality improvement mechanisms. This education program has provided a valuable learning experience for nurses new to the perioperative environment while providing our organization with the opportunity to ensure positive patient outcomes through the delivery of the highest quality of safe competent care.
