Internal Medicine Residency

In the Internal Medicine Residency program in NYU Langone’s Department of Medicine, we believe that the best way to prepare physicians for any career in medicine is to serve culturally and socioeconomically diverse patient populations in a variety of clinical settings.

We offer residents unique training experiences at three types of hospital systems in New York City—private, municipal, and federal. At NYU Langone Medical Center in midtown Manhattan, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYC Health + Hospital/Bellevue and Gouverneur campuses, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, residents encounter a broad range of patients and diseases. This experience prepares you for a rewarding career in clinical and academic medicine. Take a virtual tour to explore our residency training sites in Manhattan, and learn more about our current year-two and year-three residents.

The Department of Medicine has more than 1,200 faculty affiliated with our subspecialty divisions. We are currently training more than 221 internal medicine residents and boast a diverse research portfolio, supported by $60 million in annual funding.

Our dedication to excellence in teaching and patient care, high-quality research and residency programs, and outstanding Department of Medicine faculty combine to prepare our residents for any field they choose.

Graduates of the Internal Medicine Residency program have their choice of the most sought-after fellowships and internal medicine jobs. Approximately 70 percent of our graduates go on to participate in a fellowship program, with a match rate greater than 98 percent. The other 30 percent become general internists, both as hospitalists and in ambulatory practice in academic and community medical settings. Many graduates go on to become academic faculty, department chairs, and clinical leaders in hospitals throughout the United States.

How to Apply

We participate in the National Resident Matching Program, also known as The Match. We only accept residency program applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS), run by the Association of American Medical Colleges.

For the current 2023–24 recruitment season, ERAS has created a supplemental application for internal medicine residency candidates to assess the helpfulness of additional questions used in the holistic review process. Applicants to our program are not required to submit the supplemental application; it is entirely voluntary during this cycle. Regardless of completion of this supplemental application, every ERAS application will be reviewed in detail. We encourage candidates to complete the supplemental application to help assess the usefulness of this tool during the pilot, but we will continue to review every application whether the supplemental questions are completed or not.

Our program does not have a minimum score requirement on the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). You must pass the USMLE Step 1 before applying and USMLE Step 2 before graduating from medical school and starting residency.

Please note that a letter written by the chair of the Department of Medicine at your school and two additional letters of recommendation are required. If you are applying for a preliminary year in medicine, we will accept a letter from the chair of your specialty program in lieu of the letter from the chair of the Department of Medicine. Please note that at this time, only preliminary positions linked to neurology and anesthesiology are available.

The deadline for Internal Medicine Residency program applications is October 1. Interviews for postgraduate year 1 (PGY-1) positions take place each November through January for positions beginning in July. If you are selected for an interview, we will contact you via email.

Those who are selected for an interview are eligible to participate in any of the Internal Medicine Residency tracks that we offer, and we encourage you to rank each track that interests you. The clinical investigator track requires a secondary application and additional interviews.

We accept international graduates and sponsor J-1 visas for applicants who have graduated within the past three years and have at least one year of clinical experience practicing direct patient care in the United States. Observerships do not qualify. You must have Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification at the time of application.
