Inflammatory Joint Disease Study

Full Title of Study

Inflammatory Joint Disease Study – collection of fresh and preserved tissues and biofluids (R#06-560)

1. Tissue Collection Project

Purpose

To collect tissues that would otherwise be discarded from patients undergoing total joint replacement. These tissues—cartilage (tissue located in the joint), synovium (lining of the joint), and adipose tissue (body fat in the joint)—will be used by researchers to help find new ways to identify and treat diseases.

Basic Inclusion Criteria (requirements for being included in study)

  • Age 18 years or older
  • Diagnosis of arthritis or lupus erythamatosus
  • About to undergo a total joint replacement procedure

Basic Exclusion Criteria (reasons for being excluded from study)

  • Revision total knee replacement
  • Patients with diabetes
  • Prior knee surgery (arthroscopy acceptable)
  • History of blood-borne diseases, including HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, or syphilis

2. Biofluid Collection Project

Purpose

To collect a sample of blood and/or synovial fluid (fluid that lubricates the joint) from patients who require aspiration to remove excess fluid in the joint to relieve discomfort.  These fluid samples will be used by researchers to help find new ways to identify and treat diseases.

Basic Inclusion Criteria (requirements for being included in study)

  • Diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis
  • Age 18-65 years
  • Scheduled for a knee aspiration procedure to remove excess fluid from around the joint

Basic Exclusion Criteria (reasons for being excluded from study)

  • Diagnoisis of osteoarthritis
  • History of HIV, HBV, HCV, or syphilis

Study Visit Requirements (both Projects 1 and 2)

None; participation is completed before discharge from hospital
