NYU Langone’s Department of Neurology offers a four-week neurology clerkship program for NYU Grossman School of Medicine students. The goal of the clerkship is to teach students the principles and skills they need to recognize and treat common neurological diseases, particularly those that a general medical practitioner is most likely to encounter.

Neurology Clerkship Program

Under the direction of Jonathan E. Howard, MD, our neurology clerkship program introduces medical students to the concept of localization and diagnosis in neurology, the recognition of neurological emergencies, common neurological illnesses, and the basics of neurosurgery and neuropathology.

During the clerkship, students complete rotations that consist of two weeks of inpatient care and two weeks of outpatient care. You work with neurology teams at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital or at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Pediatric neurology experience is also available for interested students. Throughout the rotation, you work with a dedicated preceptor who focuses on bedside teaching.

During the outpatient block, you rotate through a variety of clinics to gain exposure to conditions commonly treated by neurologists. Clinics include neuro-oncology, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, headache, epilepsy, general neurology, aging and dementia, neuro-ophthalmology, autonomic disorders, neuropathology, interventional neuroradiology, neurosurgery, and neuromuscular diseases. All students spend two days in the operating room with the neurosurgery team.

Every Friday during the clerkship, you attend case vignette sessions that cover dementia, stroke, movement disorders, epilepsy, headache, neuromuscular disease, and behavioral neurology. There are also four lectures on neuroradiology. Students practice simulation lumbar punctures and learn about breath death via simulation.

We encourage you to attend weekly didactic sessions for residents and the Department of Neurology in general. These include neurology grand rounds, pediatric neurology grand rounds, neuroradiology cases, and lectures throughout the week.

Students have access to study materials through Brightspace, NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s student intranet (a Kerberos ID and password are required to login). This includes Dr. Howard’s neuroradiology self-assessment, a collection of nearly 300 cases in neuroradiology. There is also a large collection of multiple-choice questions on neuroanatomy and multiple disease topics in neurology. Students also have access to several hundred videos of patients with neurological disease.

Visiting Medical Student Electives

Students enrolled in Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)–accredited medical schools who have completed a core neurology or pediatric neurology clerkship at their institution may apply for one four-week elective. Electives offered are clinical neurology ward or consult, clinical epilepsy, epilepsy research, and pediatric neurology. Students enrolled in non–LCME-accredited schools must first submit a request to NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Office of Registration and Student Records and receive approval to apply for a visiting student elective. Learn more about program details for visiting students.
