NYU - Hospital for Joint Diseases Fellowship in Surgery of the Hand and Upper Extremity

Fellowship Overview:
The Emanuel Kaplan Hand Fellowship at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases is under the supervision of Martin Posner, M.D., and includes several institutions and core faculty members. The major fellowship time is spent at the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases. In addition, outpatient care and/or operative experience is provided at the NYU Langone Medical Center, Bellevue Hospital, Jamaica Hospital, Jersey City Medical Center, and two ambulatory surgery centers in Manhattan.

There are five ACGME accredited fellowship positions for a period of twelve months commencing August 1. The fellowship is structured for those dedicated to the treatment of problems of the hand and upper extremity.

The faculty believes that a comprehensive fellowship experience requires a combination of office and operative exposure as well as a level supervision and graduated independence.  Fellows will be exposed to the treatment of pathologies from fingertip to shoulder and will work with a wide breadth of faculty who are passionate about education.  In addition to an in depth clinical experience, there is a comprehensive didactic schedule which includes weekly conferences, microsurgery skills lab, anatomy dissections, book chapter review sessions, monthly journal club and research meetings.

The Selection Process:
This fellowship participates in the “Combined Musculoskeletal Matching Program (CMSMP)” run by the National Resident Matching Program.  Applicants are required to submit their applications by the January 13, 2017 deadline using the Universal Hand Surgery Application. Given the upper extremity focus of the fellowship, orthopedic residency training is preferred but plastic surgery residents with a sufficient foundation in hand surgery training will also be considered.  In addition to the Universal Hand Surgery Application, we require copies of the applicant’s CV, medical school transcript, Dean’s letter and three letters of recommendation, including one from your Chairman.  Selected candidates will be invited for interviews which are typically held in February.
