Community Building for Diversity & Inclusion Black & Latinx Students’ Association

The Black and Latinx Students’ Association (BALSA) is dedicated to the academic success and advancement of underrepresented minority students at NYU School of Medicine. Our events celebrate African American, Latino, Native American, and Pacific Islander cultures, while raising awareness of the issues that affect these communities. We are dedicated to research and community outreach projects that improve the health and wellbeing of underserved populations.

We actively recruit students who are underrepresented in medicine. BALSA members form a peer-support network for incoming students, and our extensive alumni network of clinicians and researchers provides students with invaluable advice and career development direction.

At NYU School of Medicine, BALSA is the umbrella organization for two other important national organizations, the Student National Medical Association and the Latino Medical Student Association. The Office of Diversity Affairs provides funds for eligible BALSA members to attend national conferences held by these organizations.

Student National Medical Association

The Student National Medical Association supports current and future underrepresented minority medical students with chapters at medical schools throughout the country, including NYU School of Medicine.  Find out how the association helps to increase the number of students of color who are entering and completing medical school.

Latino Medical Student Association

The Latino Medical Student Association is a national organization that unifies Latino medical students and promotes Latino health. Find out more about the association’s mission to support Latino medical students
