HiBRID: the Healthcare Innovation Bridging Research, Informatics and Design Lab improves healthcare delivery and patient care by supporting user-centered design in digital health applications and electronic health record innovations including clinical decision support. Our team helps peer researchers create better products for patients and the healthcare system by conducting user research, workflow analysis, prototyping for mobile and web, usability testing, and iterative and rapid pilot testing. Bringing together expertise from NYU Langone Health’s Department of Population Health and Medical Center Information Technology, HiBRID takes a multidisciplinary approach, bridging traditionally siloed fields to bring digital health innovations to fruition. HiBRID lab enacts principles of the learning healthcare system to promote incremental and disruptive innovation.


Integrated Clinical Prediction Rules: Brining Evidence to Diverse Primary Care Settings – RCT – Dr. Devin Mann
Building on the success of the original iCPR (Integrated clinical prediction rule) project, the specific aims of this proposal are to (1) integrate our previously tested and refined iCPR tool into the same commercial EHR in three different clinical settings, adapting the innovation to provider preference, culture, and local workflow rather than imposing a rigidly standardized tool, (2) identify and measure rate and variability of iCPR uptake across different settings, (3) determine iCPR impact on antibiotic prescribing and diagnostic test-ordering patterns across diverse clinical settings with a randomized controlled trial, and (4) use a well-established theory-driven implementation framework to identify facilitators and barriers to integration in each setting, and develop a toolkit for adapting and implementing the tool in diverse settings.


NYU Patient Imaging Quality and Safety Laboratory (PIQS Lab) - Dr. Leora Horwitz
The PIQS Lab is a new “patient safety learning laboratory” funded by the federal Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. PIQS Lab is a multidisciplinary collaboration led by New York University School of Medicine’s Division of Healthcare Delivery Science, housed in the Department of Population Health, and the NYU School of Medicine Department of Radiology. The purpose of this $4 million project is to be a dynamic learning environment focused on improving safety and outcomes for radiology patients. PIQS Lab will connect experienced clinicians in the NYU Departments of Radiology, Emergency Medicine, Medicine, Orthopedics, Surgery and Urology with operations, human factors and management experts at NYU Langone Medical Center (NYULMC), the NYU Wagner School of Public Policy, and NYU Stern School of Business; and with design experts at the world-famous design firm IDEO. Together, we will comprehensively redesign our systems to improve the quality and safety of diagnostic and therapeutic radiology through three synergistic projects.


Greater NYC Practice Transformation Network - Dr. Leora Horwitz
The Greater New York City Practice Transformation Network will support approximately 1,800 clinicians to expand their quality improvement capacity, learn from one another, and achieve common goals of improved care, better health, and reduced cost. To help participating clinicians transform outpatient care, the network will provide guidance and support to practices, beginning with foundational stages of leadership engagement and team-based care and moving towards advanced stages of population management, care coordination, and patient and community engagement.


Understanding Hospital Readmission Rates: Patient, Hospital, and Community Effects Readmissions are common, costly and often detrimental to patients, and there is now intense national and local focus on reducing readmission rates and in increasing coordination of care. The proposed work will advance our understanding of hospital readmissions through the study of characteristics of patients, hospitals and communities associated with readmissions, determining whether associations differ by clinical conditions, and examining the impact of federal and local efforts to reduce readmissions, using quantitative and qualitative analysis. The results of this work will enable clinicians, hospitals, and policymakers to improve healthcare delivery for all patients.


Value Based Management Evaluation
An evaluation of Value Based Management efforts at NYULMC, in which a task force assembled by the Dean/CEO and comprised of senior leadership, led by the CMO, identified opportunity areas and developed roadmaps to implement solutions. Areas of focus were blood units, imaging, ancillary, ICU, and length of stay.


Health Information Technology in Heart Failure Care
Patients with heart failure are hospitalized three million times annually for other causes. These hospitalizations are associated with poor quality of care and high morbidity and mortality. We propose to leverage health information technology to improve outcomes for these patients by creating a novel system of reminders to ensure that hospitalized patients with heart failure receive guideline recommended care.
