Training Core

Girardin Jean-Louis, PhD, leads the Training Core housed at the New York University School of Medicine. The core will provide training and mentoring for postdoctoral and junior level faculty so they can develop successful academic careers in stroke disparities research. Our Training Core is designed to:

  • Train, mentor, and sustain a network of 4 cohorts of 4 minority investigators at the junior faculty level, committed to pursuing careers in health disparities research and developing programs targeted at stroke prevention in underserved communities
  • Provide one year of training per cohort beginning with a 2-week intensive didactic summer session, followed by on-going mentorship by experienced mentors, monthly webinars to support manuscript development and grant writing; and then conclude with a 1-week follow-up summer session
  • Provide trainees with access to a world-class mentoring team of established scientists in health disparities research, behavioral medicine, cardiovascular and stroke research with a strong record of previous collaborations in mentoring minority investigators
  • Evaluate mentees’ achievements yearly for five years following program completion
