Institutional Biosafety Committee Members

NYU’s Institutional Biosafety Committee comprises no fewer than five members selected for their collective experience and expertise in recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecule technology. They can assess the safety of recombinant or synthetic nucleic acid molecule research and identify any potential risk to public health or the environment. At least two committee members are not affiliated with NYU and represent the interests of the surrounding research community.

Institutional Biosafety Committee Mission

In carrying out its mission, the Institutional Biosafety Committee does the following:

  • reviews recombinant DNA research conducted at or sponsored by the institution to ensure compliance with NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic Nucleic Acid Molecules (NIH Guidelines) as specified in Section III, “Experiments Covered by the NIH Guidelines,” and approves projects that conform to the guidelines
  • notifies the principal investigator of the results of committee review
  • sets physical and biological containment levels, as specified in Sections III-D-4-b and III-D-5
  • conducts an annual review of recombinant DNA research performed at the institution to ensure compliance with the NIH Guidelines
  • requires an additional review whenever any change, as in a source of DNA or in a host–vector system, is made to a protocol the committee previously approved, if the change is covered by the NIH Guidelines
  • adopts emergency plans covering accidental spills and personnel contamination resulting from recombinant DNA research
  • reports significant violations of or problems related to compliance with the NIH Guidelines and any significant research-related accidents or illnesses to the appropriate official and NIH Office of Biotechnology Activities within the mandated time period
  • sends completed reports by U.S. mail, courier service, email, or facsimile to the NIH Office of Biotechnology Activities
  • refuses authorization of experiments that are not explicitly covered by the NIH Guidelines until the NIH (with the advice of the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee when required) establishes the containment requirement
  • performs other functions listed in Section IV-B-2 of the NIH Guidelines
