Applying to Our Program

How many positions does your program have?
There are 7 categorical and 6 preliminary positions.

When are your interview dates?
November 21, December 5, and December 12, 2019

When do you begin reviewing applications?
We begin reviewing applications on October 1st, 2019 when the dean's letters are released. This allows us to review the applicant's packet at one time.

When does your program start?
The official start date is July 1st.

In addition to the general orientation sessions from NYU and Bellevue for all new house staff, there is also a Department of Surgery orientation. The Department orientation is held during the week prior to the beginning of the academic year. The orientation sessions are designed to introduce the incoming interns to the workings of the Department of Surgery, to get them better acquainted with the faculty and house staff, as well as help them get prepared for the first days of clinical duties.

How many letters of recommendation are needed?
In addition to the Dean's letter, 3 letters of recommendation from faculty members must be submitted.

Do you accept foreign medical graduates?

Do FMGs need to have clinical experience in the U.S.?
U.S. Clinical experience is preferred, but not mandatory.

Do you sponsor any visas?
NYU Langone does not offer H-1B sponsorship for house staff, residents, or fellows. J-1 sponsorship is available through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Do I need to be ECFMG certified prior to applying to your program?
You do not need to be ECFMG certified prior to applying to our program; however you do need to be ECFMG certified prior to being offered an interview to our program.

How do I apply for your Residency Program?
All applications for PGY 1 positions are only accepted through ERAS. We do not accept PGY 2 applications through ERAS.

When do you begin to download applications?
October 1, 2019

What is your deadline?
November 15, 2019

Are house staff required to do research?
House staff are not required, but are strongly encouraged to do research. The Resident Research Committee mentors residents from their first year to help guide and develop their research interests and facilitate both clinical and basic science research opportunities.

Do you offer pre-match?
Our program does not offer a pre-match. All positions are offered through the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).

What is the pass rate for the ABS boards?
Greater than 80% for each of the past 10 years.

Do you have a cut off year since graduation from medical school?
Our program does not have a cut off year since graduation from medical school.

What are your minimum scores for USMLE, Step 1 & 2?
We do not have a minimum USMLE score requirement. The USMLE Step 2 scores are not required at the time of the application process, but they must be submitted once you are selected into the program.

When will I know if I am selected for an interview?
Applicants who are selected for an interview will be notified via ERAS no later than November 10, 2019. Applicants who are not selected for an interview will also be notified via ERAS no later than December 10, 2019.

Is there subsidized housing, and is there any help in finding housing?
A small number of subsidized on campus apartments are made available, with priority given to house staff moving from out of state.  Housing information and forms can be found here. There is also a tab on the left side of that page for off-campus housing information. Questions can be addressed to
