HR is needed to repair DNA damage, especially damages that break both strands of the DNA helix, resulting in a double strand break. Defective HR is associated with several human diseases, including cancers, chromosome fragile syndromes and accelerated aging. We use a simple model system to study HR because the HR processes are highly conserved between yeast and humans and using yeast gives us the ability to do genetic and biochemical experiments that have direct relevance to human diseases.
