Summary

I am a mathematics graduate of the NYU Courant Institute.  I am a Research Professor in the Department of Psychiatry holding this position on a part time basis since 1987 and full time since 2016.  At the NYU affiliated Nathan S. Kline Research Institute of Psychiatric Research, I founded and headed the Statistics and Services Research Division  a multi-disciplinary services research policy group which studied ways to improve mental health service delivery.  I addressed issues such as strategies for equitable mental illness reimbursements, mental health housing for persons with mental illness, mental health needs post disasters and cost/benefit analyses of program success.   A recent focus of my work was to develop tools to reduce service delivery disparities, and improve delivery of culturally competent care.  I received substantial state and national funding to pursue these and other topics as well as federally and State funded Center grants.

Currently, I am using statistical and mathematical knowledge combined with modern machine learning approaches to identify the clinical and biological characteristics of persons that might impact their mental health problems and health outcomes.  The aim is to provide greater specificity in patient descriptors as is required for the practice of precision medicine.  I have expertise in modern approaches to classification and cluster analysis and work with researchers studying brain connectivity, treatment response in clinical trials and the identification of PTSD subtypes. To ground my analytic research, I have worked with economists, anthropologists, psychiatrists, psychologists and sociologists.  I have published over 100 paper, and continue  to mentor young students and researchers in statistics and service policy issues.
