Summary

Dimitri Abrahamsson, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at NYU Grossman School of Medicine.

Dr. Abrahamsson’s research focuses on understanding what chemicals people are exposed to through their environment and diet, and how these chemicals contribute to the development of disease. Dr. Abrahamsson’s work centers around the development of experimental and computational methods to support non-targeted analysis with high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) for the discovery of previously unknown environmental contaminants.

Dr. Abrahamsson obtained his PhD from Stockholm University in Sweden where he studied the behavior and environmental fate of volatile methyl siloxanes (VMS). VMS are a group of organosilicon chemicals that are commonly used as carriers in personal care products, such as deodorants, and have recently come under scrutiny due to their persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity.

Prior to joining NYU, Dr. Abrahamsson conducted postdoctoral research at University of California, San Francisco, and at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, where he worked on developing computational approaches for the analysis and interpretation of HRMS data from biological and environmental samples.

Dr. Abrahamsson’s research is currently funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His work in non-targeted analysis received the Environmental Science & Technology Best Paper Award in Environmental Science for 2022.
