Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Medicine
I place a strong emphasis in my clinical practice on educating myself, my colleagues, and my patients. My research has not been limited to just one area but rather has touched upon different aspects of the practice of medicine. Earlier in my career, I examined health disparities affecting Asian American patients and the integration of Eastern and Western medicine into primary care. Currently, my main focus is on advancing healthcare and bridging the gap between research, medical education, and clinical practice.
In 2020, I co-led NYU's Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU) clinical trial site at NY Health+Hospitals - Bellevue where we ran the phase 3 AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine randomized clinical trial in collaboration with Operation Warp Speed. Our team had a very strong focus to help research the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus, its impact on public health, and most importantly therapeutics and vaccines to reduce the burden of disease and death this virus brought to our world.
My current research focuses mostly on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) and how to make this an integral tool for the primary care physician in the busy outpatient clinic setting. As medical technologies advance quickly, I find it refreshing to leverage an older technology in direct patient care. POCUS allows me to supplement my physical exam, enhance diagnostic reasoning and inform medical decision-making in real time. I also love how POCUS gets me back to the bedside with patients. I am committed to studying and learning more ways to teach my colleagues - faculty, residents, advanced practitioners, and medical students - how to integrate POCUS into their clinical tool bag. I also am interested in studying whether PCPs using POCUS provides reliable findings compared to advanced imaging and how POCUS may offer some time and costs savings to us and our patients.
Ultimately, I hope to improve how we deliver high-quality patient care in primary care by using these innovative approaches and tools for the PCP while continuing to build our clinical skills in time- and resource-constrained settings.
