Summary

My research is primarily focused on developing new techniques and tools for advanced radiation therapy treatment planning. The aim of this translational research work is to standardize treatment-planning approaches, automate plan generation, and reduce radiation therapy treatment planning time.

One particular area of interest is treatment-planning automation for complex multi-isocentric treatments. By leveraging vendor provided application programming interfaces (APIs), in-house software solutions can be developed to directly interact with commercial treatment planning systems and facilitate the creation of complex field arrangements and optimization goals. I have played a leading role in the development of automated treatment planning tools for complex multi-isocentric treatments such as, total body irradiation (TBI) and craniospinal irradiation (CSI) in our department with some of our tools being available worldwide for use at other clinics and academic centers.

Recently, together with my colleagues, a focus has been placed on increasing efficiency for highly time sensitive treatments. One successful example of this effort is the implementation of an auto-planning approach that can be applied to same day single-fraction spinal stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) treatments.

My colleagues and I have recently engaged in the research and development of machine learning models for organ auto-contouring in MR images with the goal to streamline adaptive radiation therapy treatments.

As the coordinator for the Medical Physics didactics for radiation oncology residents, I have also overseen the development of the academic curriculum to prepare medical and physics residents for their physics board exam.
