Summary

I am an internationally known leader in horticultural therapy. My research centers on the effects of nature-based settings and activities on human health and well-being. I have published studies assessing the effects of participation in a specially designed horticultural therapy program on stress in cardiopulmonary rehabilitation patients, the use of horticultural therapy with children battling cancer, and on the effects of biophilic nature imagery on patient satisfaction and perceptions of room quality. Most recently, I published an article sharing practice recommendations for utilizing horticultural therapy activities and therapeutic garden design to improve quality of life and help manage behavioral challenges associated with dementia. Another current project has been the development and provision of nature-based wellness activities and webinars for staff. I have also written articles and textbook chapters on the utilization of counseling skills in horticultural therapy practice. I am Editor-In-Chief of the American Horticultural Therapy Association’s Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture and am Co-Chair of the Nature-Based Rehabilitation Task Force in the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine, pioneering and promoting the benefits and use of horticultural therapy in medical settings.
