Nedim Durmus

Nedim Durmus, MD

Research Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine

Summary

When I was accepted to medical school, it was a moment of great excitement for my entire family, as I was the first person from my family—and even from my village—to be accepted into college, especially to a prestigious medical program. After graduating from medical school, I pursued a specialization in Medical Pharmacology, equivalent to a PhD degree, where my passion for research grew. My work is focused on translating basic science into clinical applications, addressing complex medical challenges, understanding the pathophysiology of various diseases, and uncovering new therapeutic options.
Recently, my research has concentrated on pulmonary health, environmental exposures, and their long-term impacts on respiratory systems. A significant portion of my work is dedicated to studying the health effects of environmental exposure in survivors of the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster. My research has been supported by several awards from esteemed institutions, and the results have been published in numerous prestigious journals. Additionally, I have had the opportunity to present my findings at various scientific conferences.

As a full time researcher, I also love teaching and believe that the best learning method is teaching. I have had the opportunity to give lectures and mentor students at different levels at undergraduate, master and PhD programs.
I am committed to identifying biomarkers, exploring personalized therapies, and understanding the changes in cancer development in civilians exposed to dust and fumes from the WTC disaster. My goal is to contribute to improving health outcomes for populations affected by environmental hazards.
