William R. Small, MD

Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Medicine

Summary

As the 22nd physician in my family, I was inspired from a young age by the passion my family members had for helping people. This led me to pursue a career in inpatient general internal medicine, where I could assist others

during some of the most challenging times of their lives. I am passionate about maximizing the potential of healthcare teams to provide patient-centered care through effective communication and innovative

technology.

I am committed to delivering compassionate, empathetic care, by prioritizing the best interests of patients and their families. I strive to individualize all my care decisions to enact patients’ wishes to the best of my ability.

My research interests include the application of artificial intelligence, particularly large language models like chatGPT, in healthcare. This technology holds the promise of improving patient outcomes while allowing

clinicians to spend more time with their patients. I also focus on understanding team communication. In 2023, I was awarded the local PrMEIR medical education grant to study the communication patterns of

inpatient medicine teams. This research aims to provide insights about good and bad team communication, and will ultimately allow us to give targeted feedback to medical professionals about how to improve their communication.

I am excited to bring my passion for patient-centered care, my commitment to effective team communication, and my interest in innovative technology to my work at NYU Langone. I look forward to the opportunity to provide you with

the highest level of care.
