Dr. Kirsch performed his doctoral work in biochemistry and cell biology at the Max-Planck Clinical Research Units for Rheumatology in Erlangen, Germany, and obtained his PhD, summa cum laude, from the Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen. Following appointments at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and Penn State College of Medicine, he was Professor in Orthopedics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology and Director of Orthopedic Research in the Department of Orthopedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Dr. Kirsch joined NYU Langone’s Hospital for Joint Diseases, now the NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, in 2008 as Vice Chair for Research and Director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center. His research interests include chondrocyte and osteoblast biology and differentiation, molecular mechanisms regulating physiological and pathological mineralization, and molecular mechanisms affecting cartilage destruction during osteoarthritis.
