Fellowship Training: Bone

Fellows will see patients with osteoporosis and other less common metabolic bone diseases, such as Paget’s disease, and osteomalacia. Drs. Loren Greene and Valerie Peck give a monthly didactic conference on osteoporosis, where they teach skills for interpretation of bone density by DEXA and discuss management of more complex patients. Together they run an annual CME conference, “Boning up on osteoporosis,” and invite NYULMC and outside faculty with expertise in osteoporosis to discuss current clinical, pharmacological, and investigational aspects of bone disease. Endocrine fellows will also have the opportunity to attend monthly joint conferences with the NYULMC rheumatology division. In addition, there are research opportunities in the Department of Basic Science and Craniofacial Biology in the NYU School of Dentistry.

Ongoing research studies include analysis of the NYULMC large cohort of bisphosphonate-related atypical femoral fractures to elucidate risk factors, and frequency of asymptomatic atypical femoral fractures in patients on long-term bisphosphonates. Other current research interests include high bone density patients and the ethics of when to treat for osteoporosis.
