Fellowship Training: Lipids/Obesity

Fellows will see patients with common and exotic disorders of lipoprotein metabolism in two locations.

Dr. Ira Goldberg sees patients with hyperlipidemia and usual dyslipidemias in the NYULMC Diabetes and Endocrine Associates Faculty Group Practice. Many of these patients also have type 2 diabetes or are referred for preventive cardiology. Dr. James Underberg directs a large lipoprotein disorders clinic at Bellevue Hospital Center.

A weekly clinical conference is attended by these physicians and physicians from the Center for Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease. Investigations of newer lipid-lowering medications and physiologic studies of triglyceride metabolism and HDL function are ongoing.

Dr. Connie Newman has expertise in large cardiovascular outcomes trials of statins, drug safety, and the management of lipid disorders and diabetes. She is a member of the Cholesterol Treatment Trialists’ Collaboration, an international group which conducts meta-analyses of individual participant data from large outcomes trials of lipid modifying agents in order to assess effects on cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. She is an attending at the Endocrinology and Diabetes Clinic of the Manhattan VA Hospital.
