Dr. Kirsch performed his doctoral work in biochemistry and cell biology at the Max-Planck Clinical Research Units for Rheumatology in Erlangen, Germany and obtained his PhD degree, summa cum laude, from the Friedrich-Alexander University, Erlangen. Following appointments at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and Penn State College of Medicine, he was Professor in Orthopaedics, Biochemistry, and Molecular Biology and Director of Orthopaedic Research in the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Kirsch joined the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases in 2008 as Vice Chair for Research and Director of the Musculoskeletal Research Center. He is also Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery, Cell Biology, and Pharmacology in the New York University School of Medicine. His research interests include chondrocyte and osteoblast biology and differentiation, molecular mechanisms regulating physiological and pathological mineralization, and molecular mechanisms affecting cartilage destruction during osteoarthritis.
