Pathology Clinical Services for Physicians

Clinical service is one of the core missions that guides NYU Langone’s Department of Pathology and our faculty group practice, NYU Langone Pathology Associates. We offer extensive laboratory assistance for hospitals and outreach services, as well as for services that have individualized arrangements with physicians’ practices.

For our anatomic pathology services and clinical laboratory services, we guarantee reliable, effective, and efficient diagnostic support provided by expert pathologists who are board-certified and subspecialty trained.

Turnaround Time

For urgent services and small biopsy samples, nearly all laboratory results are available within 24 to 36 hours.

For all other cases, the routine timeframe for our turnaround response is between three and five days, depending on the specialized testing involved. Please note that cases requiring immunohistochemistry, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) testing, or molecular testing may necessitate additional time. However, we do frequently customize diagnostic and consultation services for referring practices so that turnaround can be optimized for your particular needs.

Fine-Needle Aspiration Services

Fine-needle aspirations (FNA) are scheduled by appointment, with same-day appointments available in most cases. Our aspiration suites are located in the Skirball Institute of Biomolecular Medicine, West Tower, suite 7N at 530 First Avenue; or at the Clinical Cancer Institute, 160 East 34th Street, suite 1016. For cancer center patients, call 212-731-5115. For others, call 212-263-5475.

How to Send Specimens

All specimens must be properly contained. Physicians without access to Epic should include a specimen requisition form with the following identifying information:

  • patient name
  • medical record number (if inpatient)
  • date of birth
  • referring physician
  • tissue source/site/specimen submitted
  • date of procedure
  • pre- and postoperative diagnosis and clinical history
  • patient address and social security number (if non-hospital patient)
  • patient insurance information (if non-hospital patient)
  • referral location

Please submit regular histological biopsies in formalin, and cytopathologic specimens fresh or, if necessary, refrigerated.

Slides should be sent to the following address:
