
Microbiology
Research in Microbiology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences prepares PhD candidates for careers in the field of microbiology and infectious diseases.
As a PhD candidate, you can participate in hands-on work in all aspects of microbiology. These include microbiome biology; mechanisms of microbial and parasitic pathogenicity and host resistance to infectious agents; the molecular, cellular, and immunological phenomena associated with microbial colonization and infection; and the genetics of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic microbes.
Classwork emphasizes the molecular aspects of pathogenesis. Course subjects include the following:
- bacterial pathogenesis
- cell and molecular biology
- immunology
- macromolecular mechanisms
- medical microbiology
- parasitology
- virology
