In vivo assessment of the mitochondrial complex I in subjects with schizophrenia
The goal of the study is to use novel brain imaging techniques to measure some part of how the brain uses energy. The study will use a radioligand called [18F]BCPP-EF to measure a protein in the brain called mitochondrial complex I. A radioligand is a substance that has a radioactive chemical attached to it so that it can be traced as it travels throughout the body. The radioligand is traced with a technology called Positron Emission Tomography (PET). PET uses a camera to take "pictures" of the radioligand in the body by detecting its radioactivity. The radioligand, [18F]BCPP-EF, binds to the mitochondrial complex I protein in the brain. The study will also use a brain imaging technique called magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure specific elements which can help us estimate the amount of energy your brain uses. Magnetic resonance spectroscopy will be performed at the same time as the PET scan and uses an MRI machine to take a picture of your brain. The study involves 3 visits over the course of 30 days. All subjects will receive a comprehensive psychiatric and medical evaluation.
In Vivo Insights of Small Vessel Changes with Age Using Ultra-Small-Superparamagnetic-Iron-Oxide (USPIO)-Enhanced MRI
This proposal seeks to perform an observational study for developing a new imaging tool using an ultra-small-superparamagnetic-iron-oxide (USPIO) contrast agent to characterize age-related microvascular changes on both 3T and 7T MRI and better understand the source and basis of brain aging.
