Genetic Analysis of Hirschsprung Disease
This research is being done to identify genes that are involved in the development of, or susceptibility to, the birth defect termed Hirschsprung disease (HSCR). Hirschsprung disease is a disorder characterized by lack of nerve cells in the gut, rendering individuals with the disorder unable to have muscle contractions necessary to pass stool. Hirschsprung disease is a complex, multifactorial condition caused by many genes. This genetic research will be done on the DNA in blood and saliva samples provided by individuals with HSCR and their affected and unaffected relatives. This study will enroll individuals with HSCR and individuals who have a first, second, or third degree relative with HSCR (e.g. parents, siblings, children, grandchildren, nieces/nephews, aunts/uncles, cousins, grandparents, great-aunts/uncles).
Genetic evaluation of patients with undiagnosed diseases
The purpose of this study is to use extensive analysis of the DNA, RNA, and/or patient-derived cells, to identify the cause of undiagnosed pediatric medical conditions. The purpose is to provide diagnoses for children with undiagnosed diseases, find out how often we can make a diagnosis in this way, see if we can arrive at that answer more rapidly, and what effect finding a diagnosis has on a patient's medical care and well-being.
Genetic Screening Outcomes in Movement Disorders
Understanding the correlation between specific genetic mutations and the presentation of symptoms in movement disorders may significantly contribute to implementation of targeted therapeutic approaches for these conditions. With the present study, we aim to assess the rate of positivity of genetic testing in a cohort of patients with Movement Disorders. This study will provide valuable information to improve genetic counseling to our patients, to help stratifications of cases (which is crucial for clinical trials), and to guide decision for genetic testing in the future.
