Surgical Technology Program Curriculum & Policies

The curriculum for the NYU Langone Health Surgical Technology Program includes the following courses:

  • Introduction and Orientation to Surgical Technology
  • Care and Safety of the Patient
  • Anatomy and Physiology
  • Principles of Operating Room Technique
  • Microbiology and Pharmacology
  • Surgical Procedures I and II
  • Clinical Practicum I and II

Students also participate in clinical rotations.

Grading Requirements

You must achieve a grade of 75 or better in each course and successfully complete the full year of study to remain in the program. Records of a student’s grades are kept on file and are available upon request.

Students take a written exam at the completion of each service.

Certificate of Completion

Upon completion of the program, provided that you have met all required criteria, you are awarded a certificate of completion. This qualifies you to sit for the national certifying examination administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).

Student Work Policy

All student activities associated with the curriculum, especially while you are completing clinical rotations, will be educational in nature. You will not receive any monetary remuneration during your educational experience, nor will you be substituted for hired staff personnel within the clinical institution in the capacity of a surgical technologist.

A student may continue to work outside the program as long as a 75 or better average is maintained, there are no delays in submitting required homework assignments, and there are no inappropriate requests to leave early or arrive late.

Students working full-time during the clinical semester are not allowed to go to the clinical area after working a full-time shift.
