Surgical Critical Care Fellowship

NYU Langone’s Division of Acute Care Surgery offers a one-year fellowship in surgical critical care through NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), this clinical training program prepares fellows to specialize in the interdisciplinary and comprehensive management of surgical patients with life-threatening critical illness. We accept two fellows to this program each year.

Fellows in our program rotate to the following sites in our system: Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, both part of our medical center on First Avenue in Manhattan, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and our affiliate NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

During the program fellows work under the supervision of faculty who are board-certified in critical care and manage intensive care unit (ICU) services composed of advanced practice providers, residents, and medical students.

The fellowship rotation schedule reflects multiple facets of critical care including the following:

  • management of specific organ failures and patients recovering from cardiothoracic surgery
  • neurosurgery or neurologic conditions
  • acute or acute-on-chronic illness
  • major surgery or complications of major surgery
  • organ transplant
  • acute trauma

General Schedule

Training begins in one of the ICUs at Tisch Hospital or Kimmel Pavilion, allowing fellows to gain familiarity with NYU Langone and our faculty. They then rotate among the following ICUs:

  • Kimmel Pavilion surgical ICU: 3 months
  • Kimmel Pavilion cardiovascular ICU: 3 months
  • Tisch Hospital medical ICU: 1 month
  • Kimmel Pavilion neurosciences ICU: 1 month
  • NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn trauma ICU: 2 months
  • Bellevue trauma ICU: 1 month
  • Elective rotation: 1 month

Academic Responsibilities

As the senior trainee on surgical rotations, the fellow is expected to interact with residents and NYU Grossman School of Medicine students, maximizing their educational experience through teaching.

Conferences

Fellows are required to complete a minimum of one project under the guidance of our faculty that will be published, presented at an appropriate local, regional, or national conference, or both.

Benefits

Fellows receive four weeks of vacation time, a book fund, and, pending approval, a travel stipend for conference attendance.

Applying to Our Program

To apply for our program, fellows must be on track to complete an ACGME-accredited general surgery training program and be eligible to sit for the American Board of Surgery examinations.

Our program participates in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP, also known as The Match) surgical critical care fellowship match. Applicants interested in our program should submit an application through the Surgical Critical Care Program Directors Society portal.
