What is a Hospitalist? 

 
The society for Hospital medicine defines the role of a Hospitalist as "A practitioner who is engaged in clinical care, teaching, research, and/or leadership in the field of hospital medicine. " Furthermore, a Hospitalist is the doctor trained in internal medicine, who specializes in taking care of acutely ill hospitalized patients. 
 
*Leads and coordinates patient care with specialists, social workers, and other health care providers
*Oversees all diagnostic workup and treatment of the patient in conjunction with treatment team
*Coordinates care with outpatient providers
* Ensures smooth and safe transition from the hospital to either home or post-care facility
* Provides clinical education and supervision of medical students, housestaff and nurse practitioners
