Human Resources Policies for PhD Candidates
As a PhD candidate at Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, you should familiarize yourself with the following human resources policies.
Every graduate student is eligible to take three weeks' vacation (15 business days) per year in addition to official NYU Langone holidays. Students must consult their research advisor before taking vacations.
A graduate student is entitled to 30 days of paid leave. If the student has a disability that prevents her from returning to work beyond that time, she would apply for New York State disability. Contact your departmental administrator to obtain a Disability Notification form and forward a completed copy to the Benefits Department via fax at 212-404-3900.
Leaves of Absence and Withdrawal
Students in good standing (with a 3.0 average) who need to withdraw temporarily for national service, serious illness, or compelling personal reasons may apply for a leave of absence which, if approved by the associate dean, maintains their status and assures readmission at the end of the leave. The length of leave should not exceed one year. For further details, please refer to the GSAS Policies and Procedures Manual.
The Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences follows all GSAS rules pertaining to leave of absence with the following modification: Students requesting a leave of absence should submit a letter to their graduate advisor stating the reason for the leave and include the last date of participation in the program. A copy of this letter should be provided to the Sackler office.
Any problems concerning the inappropriate behavior of students or faculty members should be brought to the attention of the associate dean, Dr. Naoko Tanese, immediately for necessary action. Depending on the severity of the situation, disciplinary action may be taken.
As part of a long-standing commitment of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity in all of its employment practices, NYU Grossman School of Medicine prohibits sexual harassment or intimidation in the workplace. The Department of Human Resources provides faculty and managers with the option of accessing an interactive internet-based sexual harassment prevention-training program or attending the Preventing Sexual Harassment Workshop. The interactive internet-based training is easily accessible from any computer connected to the internet and requires the successful completion of a test (approximately 45 minutes). The Preventing Sexual Harassment Workshop is a classroom-based interactive learning experience that combines lecture, group exercises, and video scenarios.
