Financial Support for PhD Candidates

At Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, our PhD candidates receive an annual stipend and other financial support throughout their tenure.

Tuition and Fees

NYU Grossman School of Medicine pays tuition and fees for all PhD program courses.

Stipend

Effective September 1, 2023, the annual stipend for graduate students and MD/PhD students for the 2023–24 academic year is $51,000. You are paid on the first day of each month, starting September 1. As a graduate student, you are a monthly employee. We encourage you to enroll in direct deposit, which you can sign up for on the employee self-service portal, atNYULMC. Log in with your Kerberos ID.

As full-time employees of the medical center, Vilcek graduate students are expected to work full-time in the laboratory and therefore cannot hold part-time positions elsewhere.

Understanding Your Paycheck

Visit the payroll section of atNYULMC to see a sample paycheck and pay stub and learn how to read them. Contact payroll services with any questions.

Computer and Housing Loans

We offer PhD candidates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents the opportunity to apply for a low-interest loan, at 4 percent, to finance the purchase of a computer or offset the cost of living in New York City. For housing, the loan covers the cost of one month’s rent per semester. We decide to issue loans on the basis of fund availability and the student’s need.

To request an application, contact Susanne Tranguch at susanne.tranguch@nyulangone.org. Loans are issued independent of other financial support and are administered by both NYU’s graduate financial aid office and the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. You are eligible to defer repayment of a loan for up to two years after you graduate, at which time you are billed in monthly installments for two years.

Grant Incentive

If you received external grant funding within the past year that covers most of your stipend, such as an individual training fellowship from the National Institutes of Health, we contribute $2,000 to your paycheck. If you receive more than one external grant, you are eligible for multiple grant incentive awards. To notify us of your award, please complete the form (Kerberos ID and password required).

Travel Awards

NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science offer travel awards for graduate students presenting their research at scientific conferences. These grants help cover the cost of conference registration, travel, and accommodations and are offered to PhD and MD/PhD candidates who have completed their first year.

We encourage all candidates to present at scientific conferences and apply for travel grants.

Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences Travel Grant

One travel award per year of up to $700 per student is available to PhD and MD/PhD candidates. To apply, complete the online travel grant application.

NYU Graduate School of Arts and Science Travel Grant

PhD and MD/PhD candidates presenting their research at a conference are encouraged to apply for a $500 travel grant awarded by NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science. To qualify, you must present your research, not simply attend the conference. To apply, complete the online Graduate School of Arts and Science travel grant application and select “Basic Medical Science—PhD” under “Your Department.” Funding is limited, so not all eligible candidates receive this grant. This grant can be awarded retroactively. The maximum number of awards that a PhD candidate may receive during their tenure is two.
