Breast Surgery Fellowship

NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers a one-year training program for a multidisciplinary breast surgery fellow. We currently train one fellow per year.

The fellowship is approved by and adheres to the interdisciplinary breast fellowship core educational objectives set forth by the Society of Surgical Oncology. Additionally, it is accredited by NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Graduate Medical Education program.

Studies have shown that the risk of dying from breast cancer are 37 percent lower if the patient is treated by a surgeon with specialty training. These findings underscore the importance of such training in the management of breast disease. Our fellowship trains and mentors the next generation of bright, highly motivated surgeons who wish to specialize in breast cancer care.

Fellows in our program receive an outstanding education in the interdisciplinary management of breast cancer. They see a wide spectrum of patients and gain experience with technologies available through the combined yet distinct resources of NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, and Perlmutter Cancer Center; and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Our training and curriculum provide a creative clinical environment in which fellows develop critical skills and experience.

Our History

What is now Perlmutter Cancer Center is among the oldest cancer hospitals in the nation, founded in 1882 as the Tumor Service of the Skin and Cancer Hospital and joining NYU School of Medicine—now NYU Grossman School of Medicine—in 1948.

Bellevue is the oldest continuously operating hospital in the United States and is now the largest facility in New York City’s public health system.

NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center is a world leader in the care of patients with cancer. One of 51 National Cancer Institute (NCI)–designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers nationwide, Perlmutter Cancer Center is recognized for world-class clinical care and for expertise in translating knowledge about the roots of cancer into innovative therapies.

This fellowship provides exposure to the full spectrum of breast cancer care, from the specialized tertiary care provided by Perlmutter Cancer Center to the ethnically diverse and economically challenged population served by Bellevue. In total, NYU Langone surgically manages more than 1,000 patients with breast cancer annually. This unique combination of clinical sites and research expertise allows us to provide the most advanced training in the management of breast cancer, while also offering training and research opportunities that prepare fellows to provide the best breast cancer care to all patients.
