When to Wonder: Picky Eating App

As a parent, you wonder about your child’s development. We wonder, too—about your child and all children. That’s why we built our digital platform called When to Wonder, which gives you science-based advice to support your child’s development while collecting research data for our study.

We want to better understand the mental health of young children around the world. We focus on early childhood concerns like eating, anxiety, tantrums, and sleep. Challenges in these areas are common, yet many parents often wonder, “Should I worry about my child?”

Our first study is about picky eating. Lots of children are picky eaters. Lots of parents wonder about their children’s eating. If you're one of them, know that you’re not alone.

About the Picky Eating App

The When to Wonder: Picky Eating app helps you see your child in a new way. Children learn through play, and find it easier to share thoughts and feelings when they are having fun. So we created games to help them share their yums and yucks, and their feelings about food.

Parents like fun, too! When you play, you and your child can compare your points of view. You can also tell us more about eating, mealtimes, and concerns like anxiety and tantrums. The more we learn about your family, the more we can tailor feedback and strategies for you.

Our app supports families as it generates new knowledge about early childhood mental health and development. Your participation helps us expand our understanding of children everywhere and paves the way for new, innovative approaches.

About the When to Wonder: Picky Eating Study

Your child doesn’t have to be a picky eater for you to join this study.

To join the When to Wonder: Picky Eating study, you must meet the following criteria:

  • be 18 years or older
  • have a child 6 years or younger
  • be the parent or legal guardian of the child

In addition to offering suggestions on how to improve your child’s picky eating, we also use the app to ask questions about other areas of child mental health. We use your responses to these questions to customize exploration activities to better meet the needs of you and your child.

Getting Started With the Picky Eating Study

Download the When to Wonder: Picky Eating app from the App Store® or Google Play. Let’s explore, learn, and wonder together!

When you first start using the app, you complete a five-minute onboarding process. This process requires you to answer a few basic questions and to review and sign a consent form for you and your child to participate in the study.

Once you complete this step, you can start playing! When you try our food sort and our video activities, the app requests permission to access your smartphone or device’s microphone and camera.
