Institute for Excellence in Health Equity Community Engagement Pillar

The community engagement pillar of NYU Langone’s Institute for Excellence in Health Equity aims to distinguish NYU Langone as the leader and preferred partner in health equity across diverse communities, as measured by the number, quality, and longevity of partnerships. Our programs and initiatives are designed to improve health equity that demonstrate commitment to community-engaged principles. We strive to guide policy initiatives that advance health equity through improving access to care and addressing social determinants of health.

We are integrating community engagement as a core principle into health professional training programs and fostering mechanisms to enhance community leadership in research. Our pillar offers a community-led grants program based on gaps in health equity in the community.

The Hearing Loss Program is a collaboration with the Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and our community partners. The program provides education and screenings for low-income immigrant children. Our program is currently serving the Brooklyn community with plans to expand to Long Island.

Our Health Policy Brief Series introduces evidence-informed interventions to address disparities in healthcare and health outcomes. In partnership with Government and Community Affairs at NYU Langone Health, our quarterly briefs engage policymakers and healthcare systems.

Our faith-based network consists of multi-faith community leaders who are committed to improving health equity. Through these partnerships, we are able to provide resources and programs to underserved communities across New York City.

The community engagement pillar is led by Nadia S. Islam, PhD, and Ayana Jordan, MD, PhD. For more information contact Farhan Mohsin, program coordinator, at farhan.mohsin@nyulangone.org.
