Division of Abdominal Imaging Abdominal Imaging Fellowship

Abdominal Imaging Fellowship

NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers seven positions annually in a one-year Abdominal Imaging Fellowship program. Fellows learn how to perform and interpret abdominal imaging examinations with a heavy concentration on MRI. The goal of the program is to train radiologists to become experts in abdominal imaging and to prepare them to assume leadership roles in radiology.

As an abdominal imaging fellow, you receive training on the most up-to-date imaging equipment available and learn innovative imaging techniques, including functional imaging with diffusion weighted images, perfusion imaging, radial imaging, and compressed sensing.

Other imaging techniques you gain experience with include MR angiography (MRA), dynamic pelvic floor imaging, MR elastography, MR enterography, liver iron and fat quantification, and 3-Tesla (3T) MRI for prostate imaging. Performing abdominal imaging research is an integral and required component of this training program.

The fellowship is overseen by Krishna P. Shanbhogue, MD, program director and Vinay Prabhu, MD, associate program director. For more information, contact Vien Tran, program coordinator, at Vien.Tran@NYULangone.org

Abdominal Imaging Training Experience

Training for abdominal imaging fellows takes place at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and NYU Langone Radiology—32nd Street. Our facilities have more than 30 high-field magnet systems, including 18 3T MR scanners, high-performance gradient system Biograph mMR scanner with simultaneous MRI and PET acquisitions, and a whole-body 7T research scanner. You also interpret abdominal imaging examinations performed at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

Clinical experience is unparalleled, with a typical case load of 100 cases per day, which includes hepatobiliary and transplant imaging (including MR elastography), pancreas MRI/MRCP, renal cancer and MR urogram, rectal and gynecologic MRI, 3T prostate imaging, MR enterography, and dynamic pelvic floor MR. The clinical training for abdominal imaging fellows includes two blocks of outpatient CT, one block of ultrasound, one block of inpatient training, and two blocks of elective.

After-Hours Coverage

Abdominal imaging fellows participate in after-hours coverage approximately once a week to cover the clinical abdominal imaging service in the evenings and on weekends. The distribution of after-hours coverage is shared with other radiology fellows, varies according to the requirements of our many radiology subspecialties, and is subject to change. There is no overnight call for abdominal imaging fellows at this time.

Abdominal Imaging Conferences

In addition to your clinical responsibilities, abdominal imaging fellows attend several lectures and clinical conferences on abdominal imaging topics.

Physics Lecture Series

The physics lecture series covers the basics of MR physics from gradient echo and spin echo imaging to advanced techniques, such as diffusion weighted imaging, diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and gating techniques. These lectures are given by research and clinical faculty with expertise in MRI and include both physics and practical imaging optimization components throughout the year.

Clinical Didactic Series

The clinical didactic series is an introduction to MRI and focuses on basics of MRI interpretation, including the pitfalls of MRI relative to CT and MRI interpretation for liver imaging, renal mass imaging, MRCP, and prostate MRI. Topics extend to advanced imaging, including diffusion, DTI, perfusion, and spectroscopy.

Clinical Conferences

Abdominal imaging fellows are required to attend weekly and monthly multidisciplinary conferences. These include weekly surgical–oncology conferences at Bellevue, gastrointestinal hepatobiliary conferences, surgical rounds, surgery morbidity and mortality conferences, urology tumor boards, MRI journal clubs, liver and pancreas conferences, rectal cancer conferences, oncology teaching conferences, and gynecology–oncology conferences.

Radiology residents, fellows, and abdominal imaging faculty also present cases during weekly Abdominal Imaging Clubs, gynecology–oncology conferences, and the MRI Interesting Case Conference.

Abdominal imaging fellows can attend additional conferences and Department of Radiology continuing medical education courses as their clinical schedule permits and may be assigned to other clinical and multidisciplinary conferences, as needed.

Abdominal Imaging Research Opportunities

Abdominal imaging fellows are expected to actively participate in Department of Radiology research. During the first research meeting of the academic year, fellows identify a research topic of interest and choose a research mentor from our abdominal imaging faculty, who are leaders in the field. We also participate in a high-level collaborative MR research program with Siemens.

Our fellows are regularly published in radiology journals, routinely present at national meetings, and win awards for their research. We provide infrastructure support and allot academic time for you to achieve your research goals. A subsidy is available to those invited to present research at a conference.

How to Apply

All Abdominal Imaging Fellowship positions have been filled through 2025. We have openings for the 2026–27 academic year.

Online fellowship applications are open from November 1, 2024 through January 5, 2025. The interview process begins January 13, 2025, and positions are offered on a rolling basis after interviews are completed.

To be considered, complete the online fellowship application. Required documents must be uploaded directly to the online application portal. If you have questions, contact Ms. Tran at Vien.Tran@NYULangone.org.
