Breast Imaging Fellowship
NYU Grossman School of Medicine offers four, year-long breast imaging fellowships in the Department of Radiology. Breast imaging fellows receive advanced training from a team of experienced breast imaging radiologists and gain experience interpreting mammograms, breast ultrasound, and breast MRI. You also perform image-guided procedures including fine-needle aspiration, breast biopsy, and needle localization.
As a fellow, your training takes place at a variety of high-volume clinical practice environments including NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center and Laura Perlmutter Center for Women’s Imaging, as well as NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. These locations handle more than 50,000 mammograms, 20,000 breast ultrasound exams, 2,000 breast MRIs, and 400 MRI-guided breast imaging procedures each year.
Breast Imaging Training Experience
A typical rotation schedule includes 43 weeks of breast imaging, 4 weeks for electives, 1 week for conferences, and 4 weeks for vacation. Breast imaging fellows participate in one evening call per month (contrast coverage, no reading required). There is no in-house weekend or overnight call.
A breast imaging journal club and a series of breast imaging and multidisciplinary didactic conferences and case conferences are available throughout the year on topics including breast imaging, tumors, and oncology. Each fellow is assigned a mentor to help navigate the fellowship experience.
Department-wide didactic series and lectures on research approaches, contract negotiation, professionalism, and MRI physics are available to everyone.
Research Opportunities for Breast Imaging Fellows
The Division of Breast Imaging is active in research, and our members regularly present abstracts and publications at national radiology and breast conferences. Breast imaging fellows with research interests have opportunities to work closely with faculty to contribute to publications, as well as to coordinate medical student and resident breast imaging research.
Paid Work Opportunities for Breast Imaging Fellows
Several paid work opportunities, involving both reading and non-reading/contrast coverage, are available to fellows pending the clinical schedule.
