Michaele Manigrasso, PhD

I graduated from Syracuse University with a degree Bioengineering. I received my joint PhD from Rutgers University (New Brunswick, NJ) and the University of Medicine and Dentistry School (UMDNJ-NJMS, Newark, NJ) in Biomedical Engineering. My graduate studies focused on the identification of arachidonic acid metabolites as key regulatory pathway in bone regeneration using a novel mouse fracture model. 

Following my PhD, I completed a JDRF-funded postdoctoral fellowship at The University of Mississippi Medical Center in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics where I concentrated on examining the role of androgens and estrogens in the development and progression of type 1 diabetic renal disease.
After the completion of this fellowship, I decided to continue my work in diabetic renal disease and joined the Diabetes Research Program at NYU in to September 2012 under the mentorship of Dr. Ann Marie Schmidt.

I hope to combine my previous research examining gender in diabetes with my current project at NYU to explore the role of RAGE and inflammation in the pathogenesis of type1 diabetes in both males and females. Most importantly, the training that I continue to receive through pursuing these studies will contribute to my development into an independent investigator dedicated to research for finding the cure of end-organ complications associated with type 1 diabetes.
